The Shower Pump Selection Guide

There are two main types of shower pump manufactured:
  • High Performance Low Voltage Centrifugal Shower Pumps
  • Regenerative 240v Mains Shower Pumps

Shower pump - low voltage

High performance low voltage centrifugal shower pumps

Low voltage isolating transformer for low noise & maximum safety in bath and shower areas. Centrifugal pumps use a paddle design for the impeller and are therefore more prone to air ingress. They require a 2 meter head of water to operate and tend to be quieter in operation.

Shower pump regenerative

Regenerative 240v Mains Shower Pumps

240v mains shower pumps are a general purpose, medium pressure twin pump. Regenerative pumps have a solid impeller with grooves cut into the body similar to a cog. This design aids the removable of air and can be fitted with a 1 foot head of pressure, i.e. 1 foot from the bottom of the header tank to the top of the pump. 240 volt mains fed they are slightly noisier than the low voltage pumps.

The following guide has been produced from the most frequently asked installer questions:

shower pump installation

  • Do not connect the pump direct to the mains water pressure
  • Pumps cannot be used with combination boilers.
  • Ensure adequate water flow to the pump. Both hot and cold feed pipes must be 22mm minimum with gate valves and a vented supply head of 2 metres (6 feet).
  • Site pump close to water supply. Ensure easy access for servicing.
  • Take great care if soldering near the pump. Even a few drops of solder flux will destroy the plastic parts of pump.
  • Maximum hot water temperature is 65 degrees C (BS 6700).
  • Low voltage pumps must only be connected with the transformers supplied with the pump.
  • Most pumps come complete with flexible 22 mm hoses. Filters supplied must be used on the inlet connections.
  • All flexible hoses and connections must be inspected at least every 6 months. Replace as necessary to prevent leaks.

All Watermill pumps are designed and manufactured in-house and each one is "wet" tested for performance, over pressure stress checked and carefully inspected for leaks. The Watermill Guarantee covers satisfactory operation for a period of two years and is contingent only upon correct installation of the unit and no damage or misuse.
