Plumbing Courses - NVQ Level 1 - Basic Plumbing Certificate
Course Aim
Students who require an understanding of household plumbing or want the basic knowledge to gain employment within the trade as a trainee - to then go on to study for the higher level NVQ’s.
Plumbing Course NVQ 1Content:
This course covers the principles and practical aspects of domestic plumbing. Students will gain the practical skills required for pipe bending and jointing, together with knowledge of basic plumbing systems layout and installation. Cold and Hot water systems, all domestic aspects of plumbing, heating, sanitation, electrical systems and lead work, along with all the generic modules of health and safety, working relationships and energy efficiency, for the home and the work place make up this award.
Modules:
The course should consist of the following modules:
An introduction module outlining the basic safety regulations.
- Installing and testing pipe systems materials and components to include copper fabrication
Gives students the skills to lay out, assemble, fabricate, maintain and repair piping systems
Plastic piping is the easiest to install, but there are special things to look for when securing and joining to an existing drain. This module outlines these.
- Gutters and rainwater pipes
Provides the knowledge for the installation, renewal, repair and maintenance of roof water systems including gutters and rainwater piping
- Sanitary ware installation.
Provide learners with skills in the installation principles of sanitary systems
- Install and connect household appliances.
Basic knowledge for installing household appliances such as washing machines or dishwashers.
Skills needed for installing an outside tap, which can result in water poisoning if water supply not connected correctly.
- Rectify blockages in sinks and drains.
Students will learn key principles for unblocking drains including basic knowledge of domestic drainage system
Supplies students with knowledge needed for making basic pipe repairs
Plumbing NVQ 1 Course Entry requirements
No Entry Requirements You will receive a guidance interview and a skills review to make sure this is the best course for you. Good Literacy and numeracy skills are needed so GCSE Grades D or above in English and Maths are recommended. A small aptitude test may be carried out.

What opportunities will this lead to?
In order to move onto NVQ Level 2 plumbing course you will normally need to work in the trade. This certificate will help you in your search for employment within the trade meaning you can then move on to the next level. In some cases this certificate may be enough to grant you entry onto the NVQ course if you have suitable employment lined up.
