Plumbing Courses - NVQ Level 3 - Technical Certificate 3
Course Aim: To meet the needs of the plumbing industry and to provide apprentice plumbers with the necessary formal qualifications for recognition as a qualified plumber.
Plumbing Course Content:
This is a one year course for those wishing to progress beyond NVQ Level 2 plumbing. Candidates must be employed in the plumbing industry and hold an NVQ 2 plumbing qualification.
Plumbing Course NVQ 3 Modules
Each unit will have a multiple-choice exam.
Provides learners with skills in the design principles of hot and cold water systems, sanitary systems and central heating systems.
- Complex cold water systems
The plumbing system in a home is divided into two sub-systems, the hot water
supply and the cold water supply. This module provides students with the knowledge of the design and installation of the complex cold water systems and the skills to maintain them.
- Complex domestic hot water systems
This module provides students with the knowledge of the design and installation of the complex hot water systems and the skills to maintain them.
- Complex sanitation systems
The way sanitation systems are operated and maintained can greatly affect the health of the population and the quality of the environment. This module provides students with the skills to install and maintain sanitation systems.
- Central heating systems (Boilers and controls)
Provides students with the ability to install and service boilers and central heating systems
- Improvement of business products and services in the plumbing industry
Students will learn of new developments in the industry.
- Plumbing studies core underpinning knowledge (question paper)
A written exam to test your knowledge of basic and complex principles of plumbing
- Plumbing studies practical tasks
A practical assessment of your applied plumbing skills
- Employment rights and responsibilities
Students learn their basic rights and duties as an employee.
Students will learn how to plan maintenance of systems as well as learning the skills to maintain and repair hot and cold water systems, sanitary systems and central heating systems
- Establish and develop professional relationships with customers and co-ordinators
This module is measure by your practical work and the way you have conducted yourself at work. It helps students learn how to make contacts within the industry in order to get contracts.
ACS Gas Safety assessment is also required to be completed in order to achieve NVQ Level 3 plumbing qualification.
To work within the Gas Industry you must hold a current certificate for Gas Safety for each category you wish to work in. It is illegal to work on any gas appliance or installation until a certificate for that category is obtained. The ACS assessments are in two parts, both written and practical. The courses usually last 2-3 days.

- Design gas supply system to meet customer needs
- Install and test the components of gas supply systems
- Commission and decommission gas supply systems. Maintain the effective operation of gas supply systems
Qualification Attainable: NVQ Level 3 in Plumbing
Progression: Successful completion of the course can lead to entry to LCGLI, BTEC National Certificate/Diploma or Clerks of Works Examinations
Assessment Methods: Continuous competence-based assessment
All modules are assessed by a mixture of practical and written tests, with a final exam.
Entry Requirements: No formal qualifications are required, but candidates for NVQ3 qualifications must be employed in the trade, and all candidates will have enthusiasm, commitment and the ability to succeed. All entrants must have a good standard of written and spoken English and Mathematics and will be required to complete an aptitude test prior to enrolment.
The industry has set entry requirements for selection into the training scheme as follows: GCSE Passes: A minimum points score of 14 (from a maximum of 6 subjects), including at least 2 points from English and 4 from Mathematics or Accountancy or Physics or Chemistry or Technology and Design
The points system is outlines below:
GCSE Grades
A = 10 points, B = 8 points, C = 6 points, D = 4 points, E = 2 points, F = 1 point.
Assessment: Assessment is by practical tasks. Written assignments and examinations and Site Assessments.
