Plumbing Courses - The Distance Learning Route
Qualifications required
Most distance learning courses do not have any entry requirements however distance learning providers often recommend you have at least 4 GCSE’s.
Approximate time to complete a distance learning plumbing course
Most courses allow you to work at your own pace but the average time to complete them is usually take between a year and 18 months.
Qualifications Achieved
It is not possible to qualify as a plumber with just distance learning. The courses will just teach you the theory of plumbing and you will receive a diploma from the learning course provider. Distance learning must be combined with practical study at a college or technical centre in order for you to become a qualified plumber.
What is distance learning?
Distance Learning courses enable you to study from home without attending a college or learning centre. You are able to study in your own home at your own pace. Distance learning courses are ideal for people who already have a full time job.

Finding a plumbing course distance learning provider
Most distance learning courses will consist of a similar syllabus. The differences will be the price and whether or not the courses are accredited. Some distance learning diplomas will be accepted as an entry qualification onto the City and Guilds NVQ Level 2 Technical certificate (if you have practical experience). Some of the courses award diplomas which are not recognised by employers or exam bodies but are useful for DIYers who just want to learn.
Make sure you check with the provider before enrolling on the course.
It is also wise to check the prices of the courses on offer to get the best value for money.
Plumbing Course Assessment
Assessment for distance learning courses usually consists of a number of multiple choice test papers that count as coursework. Depending on the course provider, these will either be posted to you for you to complete and return or you will complete them online. Some courses have final exams, not included in your course fees.
